First talk is pre-recording, by Geoff Huston: "Why Is This IPv6 Transition Taking So long? "

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:04:31
I fell off my bike and broke myself! So I was told "no flying til you heal!" So its virtual me - sorry!

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:05:01
Hi Geoff! Take care, heal well!

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:05:13
why does it matter if laggards don't choose to use ipv6? those who benefit from it can do so.

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:05:55
@Tim: network effect, even IPv6 will benefit from more IPv6 users ?

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:06:04
that's my point tim - there is no longer any impetus to see the entire job through to completion

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:06:18
@Eric: how?

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:07:58
Dear Tim, if you want to ask an "official question", please write it in the Q&A panel, or please wait until the end of the talk and ask your question using audio. Thank you! (I am saying this as a Chat Monitor).

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:13:52
CGNAT does work very well within our network. However costs is still a trigger to go for IPv6 in the long way

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:20:14
and if geoff has 35% v6 in his measurements, of that 65% how much is residential isp, how much commercial enterprise, how much R&E campuses, how much other? would be interesting to know where the laggards are. And i think enterprises were always seen to be moving last, or not at all.

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:20:44
@tim: my impression as well, enterprises are the laggards...

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:21:20
but does that matter? i guess they'll see more and more "v6 only" iot devices, but if enteerprises remain v4, so what?

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:21:34
My point is that they are not necessarily "laggards" per se - maybe they are just economnic retionalists ! :-)

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:22:35
well indeed, there's no economic incentive for an enterprise to deploy. a university campus may have depts involved in projects using ipv6, or be teaching and doing compsci research, but general comemrcial enterprises, why would they?

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:22:46
@Geoff true, there is little incentive for "normal" enterprises especially in a world of highly concentrated email providers, clouds, CDN, ...

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:23:17
Speaking from my experience, they don't see the prio as there is no incentive. Companies just want to have their apps/services and don't care about the network.

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:23:29
in R&E space, the CERN experiments are the big ipv6 users, 170 sites, 40 countries. over 2Tbit/s during their february data challange.

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:24:50
This curve about IPv4 address costs is depressing for IPv6 enthusiasts... but re-enforces Geoff's message

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:25:15
Als lack of knowledge in enterprise business is a block for adopting ipv6. They just don't care...
Even in Telco environment we are dependent on the individuals that are eager to deploy IPv6.

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:25:16
oh, equilibriation really is a word :)

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:25:40
it took 25 mins of rthe meeting for someone to mention AI :)

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:26:18
@eric, not so sure, the price is falling, and i dont think you can say it's stabilised based on a few months of data

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:26:41
it was a couple of years though

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:27:01
no, the price is down a lot from its peak 2-3 years ago

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:27:08
https://www.potaroo.net/ispcol/2024-10/ipv6-fig8.png

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:27:31
the price fell 2022 - 2023 and has now stabilized

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:27:32
peaks at 60 down to lows at 30, in 2 years

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:27:46
I think the price of 50 dollar was a bit overpriced and driven by the demand of some big hyperscalers

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:27:55
ofc 2022 was overpriced

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:28:12
I think it was COVID panic and a lack of market information at the time

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:28:27
possibly

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:29:01
and it's only really been the last 12 months or so that you can do v6-only properly to/from cloud providers, and even amazon now charge you less if you do that.

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:29:19
Just look at the transfer history on the RIPE NCC website. AWS / Microsoft were stockpiling IPv4...

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:29:20
Referring to "DNS Matters" -> Shameless plug: DNS Hackathon is coming up -> March 2025 in Stockholm -> read more here: https://labs.ripe.net/author/becha/join-the-dns-hackathon-2025/

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:30:09
i'd stockpile v4 and the rates amazone lease ipv4 to their users, they recoup it in a year or so iirc.

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:30:42
but as an org, why would we not use v6 to talk to cloud services, when it's cheaper?

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:30:53
Geoff has asked for questions.

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:30:53
@Tim, it's just a business case for them

@Vesna I alwasy redirect people to the RIPE training, they are excellent!

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:32:34
👍

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:33:20
there are LOTS of NATs in R&E.

Victoria Risk - 2024-10-31 09:38:06
What I get from this is, regrettably, geo-location via DNS is here to stay.

Victoria Risk - 2024-10-31 09:38:40
(regrettably because, privacy)

Christian Seitz - 2024-10-31 09:39:36
Thx to Geoff for already answering questions during your talk ;-)

Eric Vyncke - 2024-10-31 09:39:44
Thank you Geoff

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:39:50
there are two Geoffs!

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:39:59
Thanks Geoff for the talk

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:40:15

Rinse Kloek - 2024-10-31 09:40:41
Congrats Nico!

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 09:40:46
Congratulations!

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:40:50

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:41:07
i hope there are still penguins

Tim Chown - 2024-10-31 09:41:11
aha yes!

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:41:23
🐧

Victoria Risk - 2024-10-31 09:44:44
There was a talk about troubleshooting networking applications deployed inside a container environment that itself has its own networking environment, at the most recent APNIC. It was a horror show.

Victoria Risk - 2024-10-31 09:45:15
So it is nice to hear about the upside...

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:56:59
Any questions for Nico?

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 09:58:44
Next talk: Advent of IPv6 by
Jens Link

s/prices/prizes

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 10:04:13
Jens asked for a show of hands.

Nico Schottelius - 2024-10-31 10:05:36
Love the idea - I think main issue is that someone needs to maintain/drive it, but I'd be willing to join the effort - for Jens

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 10:08:54
Nico, please approach Jens yourself - as a chat monitor I did not read this comment on the mike, since it was not an official question. And there was no time, since we are behind the schedule a bit.

Nico Schottelius - 2024-10-31 10:09:06
Will do!

Yannis Nikolopoulos - 2024-10-31 10:12:03
I'm getting mixed signals :)

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 10:21:02
Benedikt asked - if you have any questions. Please add them to Q&A

Geoffrey Huston - 2024-10-31 10:22:21
ooops. What did I break now?

Vesna Manojlović - 2024-10-31 10:28:04
